Buying Original Abstract Art Online Isn’t the Future—It’s Now: Tony Hammer

Chapter One: The Way We Buy Has Changed

There was a time when buying something important meant getting in your car, walking into a store, meeting a salesperson and physically examining what you were about to purchase.

That world has changed.

Today, people buy automobiles online. They buy watches, jewelry, furniture, computers, appliances, clothing and virtually every other kind of consumer product online. They book hotels, purchase airline tickets, order food, manage investments and conduct business from a device they carry in their hand.

We have become so connected to the Internet that many of us are, frankly, Internet reliant. The smartphone is no longer simply a telephone. It has become a storefront, a research library, a communication center, a bank, an entertainment system and, increasingly, the place where people discover the things they eventually purchase.

I understood something about that transition very early.

Long before cellular phones became something virtually everyone carried, I was a full-time original abstract modern artist who also founded and owned one of the first cellular companies in the state of California.

At the time, cellular technology was new enough that many people had difficulty imagining what it would become. I understood that technology does not have to look ordinary when it first appears to eventually become part of everyday life. That lesson stayed with me. And it is one reason I believe the question surrounding original abstract art is no longer whether people can buy it online. They already can. The more interesting question is why anyone would still assume that beautiful original modern art has to be discovered in exactly the same way it was discovered 25, 50 or 100 years ago.

Why Was Art Different?

For most of modern history, buying original art was a physical experience.

• You visited a gallery like Hammer Fine Art.
• You attended an exhibition.
• You met an artist or dealer like Tony Hammer.
• You saw a painting hanging on a wall and decided whether you connected with it.

There was a very good reason for that. Art is physical. An elegant original abstract painting has texture, scale, color, surface and presence. A photograph on a computer screen cannot completely reproduce the experience of standing in front of an original. But that does not mean the Internet cannot be part of the experience. In fact, the Internet can do something a traditional gallery cannot always do:

It can put the gallery in front of you whenever you want to see it.

At two o'clock in the afternoon, two o'clock in the morning, on a weekday, on a weekend, from Miami or Manhattan, a collector can open an online art gallery like Hammer Fine Art and begin exploring. That changes the first step. The Internet does not have to replace the gallery. It can expand the gallery.

Buying Original Abstract Art Online Is Different From Buying Decor

There is an important distinction between buying a mass-produced decorative image and buying a beautiful original painting.

• An original is a singular physical object.
• There is one canvas.
• One surface.
• One sequence of decisions made by the artist.
• One finished work.

That is part of what makes original modern abstract art so compelling. You are not simply selecting an image to put on a wall. You are discovering a physical work that exists independently of the screen through which you first encountered it.

And that discovery can now begin online.

A collector searching for a powerful abstract artwork online can explore an artist's work before ever speaking with the artist.

A homeowner looking for original abstract paintings for sale online can compare works from the comfort of home.

An interior designer can research abstract art online before presenting possibilities to a client.

A collector in New York can discover a vibrant original abstract painting created in Miami and South Florida.

A California buyer can discover a colorful abstract painting that might otherwise never have crossed his or her path.

• That is the transformation.
• The Internet has not changed what an original painting is.
• It has changed who can discover it.
• The Online Gallery Is Open 24 Hours a Day
• That matters more than people sometimes realize.

People are busy.

They work. They travel. They raise families. They run companies. They manage homes and businesses. Their schedules do not necessarily conform to traditional gallery hours. That is one of the great advantages of buying original art online.

You’re Busy. We Understand.

Tony Hammer’s online gallery gives you the opportunity to take your time, explore the collection and purchase exceptional investment grade original artwork online whenever it is convenient for you.

Hammer Fine Art is not simply a place to view Tony Hammer’s work. It is also an online store where original artwork can be purchased 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

And for collectors in South Florida, there is another option. During business hours, you can contact Tony Hammer to arrange an in-home or in-business art demonstration, giving you the opportunity to experience selected artwork in your own environment.

• The Internet provides the convenience.
• The artwork remains real.
• The artist remains accessible.

From a Local Gallery to a Gallery Without Borders

This is where the concept becomes particularly interesting.

A traditional gallery is limited by geography. An online gallery does not have to be.

Hammer Fine Art is based in South Florida, but the collection is available to art collectors nationwide & globally.

That means a person searching for beautiful original abstract art online in Miami can discover the collection.

So can someone looking for original abstract art online in Miami Beach.

An abstract art collector in Aventura can explore the same online gallery as a collector in Palm Beach.

An abstract art buyer in Boca Raton can discover an original painting without driving to a gallery.

And a art collector in New York, Los Angeles, San Francisco or Chicago can discover Tony Hammer's original abstract paintings without ever leaving their phone or laptop. That is the power of the Internet. t creates discovery first. The relationship can come afterward.

This is what nationwide online art buying actually means. It does not mean that geography disappears. It means geography no longer determines who gets to discover the artwork in the first place.

The Internet Changed the Beginning of the Art-Buying Process

For generations, an artist needed to get people physically into a gallery before the artwork had a chance to make an impression.

• Today, the first encounter can happen anywhere.
• A person can see a painting on a phone.
• Read about the artist.
• Explore other original works.
• Look at the painting in different interior settings.
• Read collector experiences.
• Study the details.
• Contact the artist.
• And eventually decide whether that particular work belongs in his or her life.
• That is a remarkably different process from the traditional gallery model.
• And yet the most important part has not changed.
• The painting still has to work.
• It still has to make you stop.
• It still has to create an emotional reaction.
• It still has to look right in the room.
• It still has to be something you want to live with.
• Technology can create the opportunity for discovery.

It cannot manufacture the feeling you have when you see a painting you cannot stop staring at.

That still belongs to the art.

Why This Matters for Collectors

• The growth of online art buying is not simply about convenience.
• It is about access.
• There are extraordinary artists whose work a collector might never encounter simply because the collector does not live near the artist's gallery.
• The Internet changes that equation.
• A collector does not have to begin with the question:

“What galleries are near me?”

The collector can begin with:

“What artwork moves me?”

That is a much bigger question. It opens the door to artists, styles, cities and collections that might otherwise remain outside a buyer's field of vision. For an artist, it creates an equally important opportunity. The artist no longer has to wait for the right person to walk through the right door at the right time. The door can be open all day. Every day. To the entire country. And ultimately, to the world.

Hammer Fine Art: The Gallery Without a Closing Time

This is where I believe the future of original art has already arrived. Hammer Fine Art is a real art business with a physical history, an artist behind the work and original paintings that exist in the physical world. But the gallery is also online. That means someone can view Tony Hammer's famous paintings from  Florida, New York, California, Illinois, or anywhere else nationwide and begin exploring immediately. The online gallery is not a substitute for the art.

It is the doorway to the art.

That distinction matters. The future of buying original art is not necessarily a world in which galleries disappear and everything becomes digital. It can be a world in which the best aspects of the traditional gallery—artistic judgment, personal relationships, original work, authenticity and human connection—are combined with the extraordinary reach and convenience of the Internet. That is the world Tony from Hammer Fine Art is building. And that is why buying original abstract art online isn't the future. It's now.

Chapter One

• This is only the beginning of the conversation.
• The way people buy art is changing.
• The way artists reach collectors is changing.
• The way collectors discover artists is changing.
• And the Internet has become one of the most powerful bridges between the two.
• The next chapters will go deeper into that transformation—and into what it actually means to buy, collect, understand and live with original art in the modern world.
